Rosie O’Donnell’s Outspoken Take on Oprah, Bezos’ $50M Wedding, and Why Venice Fought Back

“How is that possible?” Rosie O’Donnell asked, her disbelief echoing across Instagram as she watched Oprah Winfrey—queen of empathy—celebrate at Jeff Bezos’ jaw-dropping Venetian wedding. For Rosie, the sight of Hollywood’s A-list mingling with billionaires in a city under siege by overtourism was more than just another tabloid headline. It was a gut punch.

Rosie didn’t hold back. “He treats his employees with disdain. By any metric he is not a nice man,” she posted, referencing a string of investigations into Amazon’s harsh warehouse conditions and the company’s sky-high injury rates. For years, Amazon has faced accusations of prioritizing profits over people, with workers describing relentless quotas, denied overtime, and even “coffin-sized booths” for “wellness breaks.” As The Guardian reported, “They’re more concerned about profit,” with federal safety regulators and the Department of Justice piling on the pressure for change.

Yet, while Amazon’s labor controversies simmered, Venice was boiling over. The Bezos-Sanchez wedding, a $50 million spectacle featuring 27 designer outfits and a guest list that read like a Met Gala seating chart, sparked outrage among locals. Hundreds of Venetians and activists took to the streets with banners reading “Kisses Yes, Bezos No,” and “If you can rent Venice for your wedding then you can pay more tax,” as described by NPR and the BBC. Protesters claimed a rare victory, forcing the main celebration to move venues: “We managed to move one of the most powerful people in the world—all the billionaires—out of the city,” said Tommaso Cacciari of No Space for Bezos.

The criticism wasn’t limited to locals. Charlize Theron, hosting her own charity bash in LA, quipped, “I think we might be the only people who did not get an invite to the Bezos wedding. But that’s OK because they suck and we’re cool,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. She used the moment to highlight the world’s “backwards” slide on women’s rights, immigration, and LGBTQ+ protections. Meanwhile, Olivia Munn, Rosanna Arquette, and Mia Farrow publicly praised Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, for giving away $19.3 billion to over 1,600 charities, contrasting her generosity with the excess on display in Venice.

Rosie’s outrage wasn’t just about celebrity hypocrisy. It was personal. After Donald Trump’s re-election, she left the U.S. for Ireland, explaining to Variety, “With the current political climate, when would it be safe to come back with my child?” She’s found peace in Dublin, but her activism hasn’t dimmed. On Substack, she wrote, “We have become numb to gross excess. We have learned to tolerate it. Celebrity worship. Devoid of humanity.”

Venice, a city with a history of protests against billionaire takeovers, became the stage for a larger conversation about who gets to celebrate, who gets to profit, and who gets left behind. While Bezos donated €1 million each to three environmental groups, activists dismissed it as “just a misery and only aimed at clearing Bezos’ conscience,” as quoted by Newsweek.

Even the wedding’s details—Lauren Sanchez’s Dolce & Gabbana gown, the $2.5 million pink diamond ring, and the “industrial grey hellscape” carpet—became fodder for online mockery. Social media users zoomed in on everything from the “forlorn” staff in the background to the carbon footprint of the guests’ private jets. Leonardo DiCaprio, usually outspoken on climate, tried to hide under a baseball cap, but the internet noticed.

Rosie’s public stand—calling out Oprah, Bezos, and the culture of excess—resonated with a world grappling with inequality, climate anxiety, and the ever-blurring line between celebrity and power. For many, her words weren’t just a celebrity feud—they were a rallying cry.
