Take a Dip in History as Paris Welcomes Swimmers Back to the Seine After 100 Years

Isn’t it wild to think that for over a century, the Seine—Paris’s sparkling, world-famous river—was strictly off-limits for swimmers? Fast forward to this summer, and Parisians are splashing under the Eiffel Tower, tourists are floating near Notre Dame, and the city’s riverbanks are buzzing with the energy of a dream finally realized.

The grand reopening of the Seine to public swimming marks the end of a 100-year ban, a milestone made possible by a massive €1.4 billion clean-up project that turned Olympic ambition into a citywide legacy. As Pierre Rabadan, Paris’s deputy mayor for the Seine, put it, “We’re especially happy to have proved the sceptics wrong and to be able to deliver on the commitments we initially made, on something that was very big and very complicated to achieve” (main article).

Three brand-new swimming sites have popped up along the river—one shimmering beside Notre Dame, another with Eiffel Tower views, and a third in eastern Paris. Each spot is decked out with changing rooms, showers, and beachy furniture, ready to welcome more than 1,000 swimmers daily until the end of August. And the best part? It’s completely free to take the plunge.

But before anyone grabbed their goggles, the city had to tackle some serious pollution. The Seine’s troubled past reads like a cautionary tale: by the 1970s, it was so polluted that fish had all but vanished, and more than half of Paris’s wastewater was flowing untreated into the river. The transformation began with expanded treatment plants and continued with the construction of a colossal underground reservoir—imagine a tank the size of 20 Olympic swimming pools—to capture rainwater and prevent sewage overflows during storms.

The city’s efforts have paid off in more ways than one. “Today we have between 30 and 35 species of fish in the city centre, and we get catfish measuring 2m long. It has been a transformation,” shared Bill François of the Paris fishing federation (BBC). And with the Olympics spotlighting the Seine, the world watched as athletes—and even Mayor Anne Hidalgo herself—dove in to prove the water’s new credentials.

Of course, safety is top of mind. Every day, health authorities test the water for bacteria like E. coli and enterococci. A simple flag system—green for go, red for wait—keeps swimmers in the know, while lifeguards in high-vis vests keep a watchful eye on the river. Swimmers must wear bright yellow life buoys, and diving is a no-go due to shallow spots. “This is so chic, to swim in the Seine, next to Île Saint-Louis,” said Parisian Lucile Woodward, adding with a laugh, “My skin is OK” (main article).

Urban river swimming does come with its quirks. After heavy rains, the city may temporarily close sites to let the water quality bounce back. It’s a reminder that, even with state-of-the-art infrastructure, nature still calls the shots. Yet, the city’s commitment to daily testing and transparency has set a new bar for urban water safety, inspiring similar projects in cities like Zurich, Copenhagen, and even Los Angeles (TIME).

For those not quite ready to brave the river, Paris offers plenty of other ways to cool off—from the chic Piscine Molitor to floating pools like Piscine Joséphine Baker, and the ever-popular Paris Plages with its pop-up beaches and palm trees (Yahoo).

The Seine’s revival is more than a summer trend—it’s a symbol of what’s possible when a city dares to dream big, invest in its environment, and invite everyone to join in. As swimmers take their first legal strokes in the heart of Paris, the city proves that even the most iconic rivers can be brought back to life—one dip at a time.
