How a Faked Death, a Decade-Old Rape Kit, and One Survivor’s Courage Led to Justice

What happens when a man tries to outwit the justice system with a fake obituary, a wheelchair, and a borrowed accent? In the case of Nicholas Alahverdian—also known as Nicholas Rossi—it ends with a Utah jury convicting him of rape, and a survivor finally hearing the word “guilty” more than a decade after the assault.

The story is as tangled as it is disturbing. In 2008, a 24-year-old woman recovering from a traumatic brain injury met Alahverdian through a personal ad. Within weeks, they were engaged. She testified that the relationship quickly soured: he became controlling, demanded money for rent and car repairs, and pressured her into buying their engagement rings. When she ended things, she said he raped her in his bedroom after she drove him home one night. At the time, dismissive comments from her parents kept her from going to the police.

Her case might have remained buried if not for a decade-old sexual assault kit finally being tested in 2018, part of Utah’s push to clear its backlog. That DNA match identified Alahverdian, who by then had cultivated a new life under multiple aliases. In 2020, an online obituary claimed he had died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. But the ruse unraveled when hospital staff in Glasgow, Scotland, recognized his tattoos from an Interpol notice while treating him for COVID-19.

His capture underscores the stakes of tackling the rape kit backlog. According to the Department of Justice’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative, more than 245,000 kits have been inventoried nationwide, with over 100,000 tested. Those tests have produced over 19,000 CODIS hits, and 78% of those hits are linked to violent serial offenders without prior sexual assault convictions. Clearing the backlog doesn’t just close cold cases—it can stop repeat offenders in their tracks.

The delays in testing kits are often rooted in systemic failures: under-resourced sex crimes units, lack of standardized policies, and biases that lead some officers to dismiss cases as “unfounded.” Survivors may disengage from the process after poor treatment by law enforcement, and in many jurisdictions, kits tied to known suspects have historically gone untested. Experts stress that every kit matters—not just for identifying strangers, but for linking acquaintances to other unsolved crimes and corroborating survivors’ accounts.

For the Utah survivor, the wait was excruciating. “It took courage and bravery to take the stand and confront her attacker to hold him accountable,” Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said. That courage is especially significant given what research shows about the mental health toll of sexual assault. Survivors often face PTSD, depression, anxiety, and dissociation, with severity influenced by the nature of the assault and the relationship to the perpetrator. Negative social reactions—like disbelief or blame—can deepen trauma and delay healing.

Advocates say a victim-centered approach is essential, especially in cold cases. That means transparent communication, trauma-informed practices, and comprehensive support services from the moment a kit is collected to the final court date. It also means recognizing that coming forward years later is not a sign of fabrication—it’s often a survival strategy in a system that hasn’t always been safe for survivors.

Alahverdian’s conviction in Salt Lake County is not the end of his legal troubles; he faces another rape trial in Utah County next month. But for one woman, it marks the end of a 15-year fight for justice. And for the public, it’s a stark reminder: when evidence is tested, when survivors are believed, and when persistence meets inter-agency cooperation, even the most elaborate lies can’t hide the truth forever.
